History of the department

The Department of Higher Mathematics of Kryvyi Rih National University is one of the oldest departments of the university. It was founded in 1927. V.S. Boryshkevych was its first head (1927−1936, 1937−1941). In 1943−1944 the department was headed by Professor A.A. Rebikov, and in 1944−1945 by V.V. Sakk. In the postwar years (1945−1951) the department was headed by Ph.D (Physics and Mathematics), Associate Professor O.O. Markov, and from 1951 to 1952 by Associate Professor H.K. Tatur. From 1952 to 1954 the department was headed by a famous mathematician, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor S.Н. Krein. Later, the department was headed by Ph.D (Physics and Mathematics), Associate Professors Н.A. Artіomov (1954−1961), M.A. Dukhovnyі (1961−1970). From 1970 to 1985 the department was headed by Professor V.F. Bуzov, during 1985−2010 by Ph.D ( Physics and Mathematics), Professor V.V. Lуpovyk, from 2010 by Ph.D (Engineering), Associate Professor I.I. Maxуmov.

At the Department of Higher Mathematics, the educational process is provided by 9 members of staff: the head of the department Ph.D (Engineering), Associate Professor I.I. Maksуmov; Аssociate Рrofessors N.M. Kiіanovska, T.M. Kovalchuk, N.V. Rashevska, M.O. Rashevskyі; senior lecturers and assistants of the department: M.Н. Afanasііeva, A.V. Buhra, O.O. Zavsehdashnіa; senior laboratory assistant I.O. Shcherba.

The Department of Physics was created simultaneously with the foundation of Kryvyi Rih Mining Institute in 1922.

Unfortunately, there are no documents on development of the Department during the pre-war years remained.
After the liberation of Kryvyi Rih and reconstruction of Kryvyi Rih Mining Institute premises, associate professors O.S. Lashko, S.Y. Krasnytskyi and assistant V.F. Kharytonova worked at the Department

At present the Department comprises 5 educational laboratories in classical mechanics, molecular physics and thermodynamics, electrodynamics, optics and atomic physics.

Students are provided with educational and methodical literature.  Teachers/lecturers of the Department have written and published textbooks approved and recommended by the Ministry of Education and science of Ukraine.  Methodical guidelines for practical and laboratory classes are constantly being improved.
The Department conducts the first round of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Physics annually, carries out career guidance activities, coordinates the students’ scientific group work.
Under the guidance of Doctor of Engineering, professor Ye.O. Nesmashnyi, intensive research work is carried out at the Department of Physics. This scientific work is connected with introduction of the latest fundamental scientific achievements into mining production: rock mechanical support of surface mining and seismic safety of mass explosions in open pits. Lecturers of the Department take an active part in international and national conferences and seminars.

The Department maintains educational and scientific contacts with related departments of the National Mining University (Dnipro), Moscow State Mining Universty and Saint Petersburg Mining University (Russian Federation), École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris /Mining School of Paris (France) and Montanuniversität Leoben/ Mining University (Austria).
